Exploring this year's most sought-after kitchen styles

We are slowly approaching the end of another year and, as in previous years, we at Nordic Kitchens look at the trends that have been and will be the strongest in the future.

Contrasts

All though we are dreaming about harmonious kitchens in material inspired by nature, we are also looking for dynamic designs to make our kitchen more interesting, personal and distinguished. A good way to do this is to use contrasts. Shiny and matte, multi colored terrazzo paired with classic shaker cabinets, or why not a kitchen island in stainless steel contrasted by dark oak cupboards.

Another strong indicator that we want to create contrasts, is the growing request for natural stone with dramatic patterns, like Arabescato- or Calacatta marble. By letting something stand out, the room is filled with identity and beautiful details are enhanced.

Back to Nature

We live our lives constantly online and spend several hours a day in front of blue and white screen lights. Therefore, there is a longing for nature and simple and stripped down esthetics. This means that the craze for natural materials and earthy colors will be coming with us into the new year.

New for the nature trend in 2022 is that we dare more colors than grey and beige, and instead use colors such as olive green and warm tones such as burnt terracotta and eggshell. The aim is to harmonize the kitchen worktop, cabinets and to create a soothing feeling we are all looking for.

To further add an element of nature, we choose materials with a tactile and organic structure. The small number of kitchen accessors left out on the kitchen worktop are made out of handmade ceramics, metal, or wood.

Spacious

After years of abundance and consumption has made the minimalist, cured home one of the most requested. To create a restrained and airy look only our most favorite things are left on display and the rest of our kitchen appliances are kept behind closed doors with a uniformed design to keep the minimalist expression.

Pocket cabinets are a good example of this. When the doors are closed, the cabinet almost disappears into the wall, while open makes the kitchen significantly larger and adds an extra workspace. In a pocket cabinet, you can hide a small coffee and tea station, and many chose to hide the fridge, freezer and dishwasher behind another cabinet door.

In 2022 we continue to request a worktop fan that is integrated in the hob. To create even more air and space in the kitchen, you can align the various cabinets and doors and skip handles when possible. Social

From once being hidden behind the maid's chamber, the kitchen is today the central hub of the home - where the family gathers for everyday life, and daily routines take place, but also a place to socialize and invite friends to party.

At the top of the wish list for 2022 you will find the kitchen island. The kitchen island can be equipped with a sink and a stove so that you can socialize even during cooking. More common we also see the kitchen being moved to the home’s larges room during a renovation.

Shaker

Fast fashion, climate crisis and an abundance of impressions have made us drawn to things that breathe timelessness and elegance. If we renovate, it must be an investment for the future and we do not want designs risking getting tired of over time. With this in mind, our love story with the Shaker Kitchen continues, a style that is constantly current and that always has that bespoke, well-thought-out feeling.

The colors are sober and toned down, the materials are luxurious and well designed. If you want to get the elegant feeling without building a Shaker kitchen, you can design a kitchen with a furniture feel, like giving the kitchen counter rounded corners, a design that creates a very exclusive and thought through look.

The top cabinets are often removed and ceramics is stored in a display cabinet. The key words are discreet and restrained luxury and the feeling we strive for is everyday chic rather than decadent. Everything from the floor to the color of the ceiling and windows is matched to the kitchen which is adapted to match the architecture of the house.
