Studio Merlin’s extension features large pivot doors and hinged windows made of Red Grandis timber, allowing natural light to flood the space and provide unobstructed views of the garden.
Inside the extension, minimalist off-white walls and polished concrete floor are complemented by exposed Douglas Fir roof structures, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The London based architect agency Studio Merlin’s update of the Victorian townhouse, Høj House, in Stoke Newington, London features an open-plan kitchen and dining area designed to enhance indoor-outdoor living. By adding an extension to the townhouse and reconfiguring the lower ground floor, they have created a Scandinavian-inspired ‘dining room in the garden’. Additionally, a light-touch refurbishment of the upper floors has been carried out, further unifying the home’s architectural vision.
The open-plan kitchen and dining area expands the home’s lower ground floor into the garden and encourages indoor-outdoor living.

“We aimed to create a flexible space that would allow a seamless flow of activity from out to in, particularly during the summer for family gatherings.”
The Høj House, “high house” in Danish, boasts a light color palette of soft pastel tones, with a careful mix of old and new, creating a harmonious home that embodies Danish design and Nordic simplicity, while emphasizing light, space, and timeless elegance.
The staircase features old english details which creates an interesting contrast to the otherwise minimalist aestetic of the home.

Soft pastels, wooden details, and carefully selected Danish-designed furniture are recurring elements in the house, contributing to its warm yet minimalist aesthetic.

Soft pastel colors combined with white details, and robust wooden floor, are repetitive elements throughout the townhouse, contributing to its natural, warm minimalist aesthetic.
Original details mix with modern architecture, but the influence of Scandinavian and Danish design is very clear. Danish design furniture and a Scandinavian color palette come together to create an eclectic home full of personality.

To help the extension on the lower ground floor, integrate further with the garden, it features a polished concrete floor that references the patio.
Light is flooding in through large windows, inviting the surrounding greenery into the home.
The patio is also thoughtfully designed, and the beautiful green roof with the flower meadow enhances the connection to nature, creating a lush oasis in the midst of the urban environment.
“The interventions at Hoj house are deeply functional yet deliberately playful. Through the architecture we tried to create opportunities for stories – just ask the resident fox who often camps out on the wildflower roof.”
In the patio, a dedicated spot for morning coffee and fresh air has been achieved through the creation of an integrated concrete window cill bench.
Warm neutral wood elements combined with off-white walls and polished concrete floor captures the essence of modern Scandinavian design.
