Step into the Shaker Kitchen in Copenhagen

In the trendy district of Frederiksberg in central Copenhagen, a Swedish-Danish couple has settled down after several years in London. The couple longed to move home to Scandinavia to start a new life in their new apartment, which was completely renovated. What used to be a salon had to be a kitchen and the kitchen instead became a spacious bathroom. The couple wanted to leave the beautiful original details and come to their senses, so have not added modern solutions such as spotlights in the ceiling or newly laid floors.

The longing for the Scandinavian also led to the fact that when moving the kitchen, they chose to build a modern Scandinavian take on a classic shaker kitchen. The same feeling for the craftsmanship, simplicity and quality that the shaker movement has made synonymous with can be found in the spacious kitchen.

Classic elements such as doors consisting of five parts (four geared frame parts and a mirror), air around the top cabinets and clean beautiful handles can be found in the kitchen. The beautiful toned down colors are also typical of the Shaker style, whose authors mixed their colors of clay and plant pigments, which led to the muted, matte tones associated with Shaker kitchens.

The couple, who have now left a city behind and moved to a new one, wanted a social home where they could have big dinners. However, they wanted to have a separate dining room where you can entertain your guests without being distracted by any dishes and therefore have their large dining table in an adjoining room.

Instead, you have a large kitchen island in the kitchen. However, the kitchen island is without electricity and water so that future owners can disconnect it if they would rather have a larger dining area in the kitchen. A sustainable and smart way to build a new kitchen!

All the necessary functions can fit along the wall, but they have still built a practical kitchen island where you can cook together in a social way, cut and chop without being in the way of someone else.

It feels modern and minimalist while at the same time being classic and timeless. The clean cabinet doors enhance both the minimalist mid-century design from Denmark and the beautiful stucco from the turn of the last century that can be seen on the ceiling. The discreet tones of gray and white enhance and beautify each other and the beautiful gray marble shines in its splendor.

The relatively calm grain in the stone attracts the eyes just right in that typical Scandinavian way at the same time as it is according to the principles of the Shaker movement. In order not to be too stiff or stripped down, the impression has been softened with curtains from Gotain and wooden furniture including Wegner's classic Y-chair. The inside of the cabinets and drawers are also clad in solid wood, a beautiful white pigmented oak, which softens at the same time as it adds a feeling of long lasting quality and elegance.

The kitchen is painted in a warm light gray tone and matched by the gray marble. They are matched by stainless steel details and the warm-stained wooden floor, the oak furniture and the oak-clad insides in cabinets and drawers.

The handles on drawers and cabinets are made by the Danish interior designer Brand Collective, in this kitchen, the handles help to create a little coolness.

The stove and sink are both generous in size with their 80 cm in width. The stove and the other appliances come from Miele and the minimalist faucet is a Quooker, a faucet where you can get boiling water directly from the tap. Nice and practical and in every way a modern interpretation of the Shaker kitchen where function, quality and purity were the vision.
