A well-designed kitchen becomes the natural gathering place in most homes.

A well-designed kitchen becomes the natural gathering place in most homes.

1. A smart flow in the kitchen really makes everyday life easier!

Think about whether you are usually one, two or more in the kitchen. Those who are usually alone want to access most things without having to go back and forth and without having to stand on a stool for the most important kitchen utensils.

If you are usually two or more in the household, you should be able to open important drawers at the same time as someone is standing by the stove or at the sink. A good way to get a clear picture of this is to think about what works well with the kitchen you have today and what’s not working. Is there a storage area by the fridge when you get home from the grocery store, is it close to water from the stove and can you hand wash and use the dishwasher at the same time? The working flow you decide on, you will then live with for a long time, so make sure to spend some extra time on this!

2. How much storage do we need?

It can be just as neat with an airy, stripped-down kitchen that only consists of a simple row of base cabinets. But if you have a magnificent collection of porcelain, kitchen utensils or other kitchen details, then perhaps more storage is needed? Take an inventory of your current cabinets, see how much you think you want to keep, maybe you even feel that you need more storage in the future? Then start from that when you make your storage budget and floor plan.

3. How do you use the kitchen?

Think about how you use your kitchen today. What do you do daily, what do you do often? This way you can calculate how many electrical outlets are required, how big a sink and refrigerator are needed and maybe even if you need extra lighting or doors (juice some celery every morning before the rest of the family is awake, maybe a door is in place, do you like to fry the food, maybe you need a really good fan and do you grow herbs in the kitchen, maybe a plant lamp would be considered?

4. What does the kitchen cost, develop a budget for the renovation

It will be much easier to plan the new kitchen if you know how much money you will be able to spend on the renovation. If the budget is limited, it is worth putting the money on what’s visible in the kitchen. Also keep in mind that the price tag may end up slightly higher than you expected in your first calculation, so budget for unexpected costs. Also keep in mind that it will be expensive to have to redo everything in a couple of years. Therefore, invest in quality materials that can withstand the wear and tear that a kitchen is exposed to. 5. Take in the surrounding architecture

Look around in your home. What style elements has the architect used, what materials and what colors. What style do you have for the remaining furniture and decoration? By designing a kitchen that suits both the home and yourself, you make sure to increase the life of the kitchen significantly because you will be less inclined to replace it when the trend changes.
