The Copenhagen townhouse

In a townhouse located in Copenhagen's most popular residential area, we have designed a kitchen for architect Jeppe Dueholm and his family. Every choice has been made with great respect for the house's history, and the design is inspired by the brick facade and the organic staircase that connects the house's three floors.

Just a short walk from Copenhagen's botanical garden lies Kartoffelrækkerne. The 150-year-old brick facade of the townhouse sets the tone for a renovation where natural and durable materials blend seamlessly.

A short walk from Copenhagen's botanical garden, along one of the three lakes that connect the city's different districts, lies Kartoffelrækkerne, probably one of Northern Europe's most charming residential areas.

This very creative and urban atmosphere was something Jeppe had long dreamed of, and when the opportunity to purchase one of the houses arose, he and Catja seized the chance. The couple, who met 16 years ago, has previously lived in Copenhagen, London, and Lyon, but for the past eight years, Stockholm has been their base, where they also had two children.

Kartoffelrækkerne has become an iconic area in Copenhagen, with a very special atmosphere — an oasis in the heart of the city. As an architect, I’ve always been drawn to the idea of living in this environment. The house is one of the reasons we decided to move back to Copenhagen, says Jeppe.

The integrated bench with built-in storage reflects the family's vision for the kitchen in many ways. While it blends seamlessly into the surroundings, almost disappearing from view, it also contributes to the kitchen’s identity and enhances the social function they wanted the room to have.

For the kitchen, every choice has been made with great respect for the house's history, and the design is inspired by the brick facade and the organic staircase that connects the house's three floors. A durable steel worktop contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored upper cabinets, Lindanäs limestone backsplash, and dark-stained oak cupboards. The layout and material mix ensure that the kitchen is not only a functional cooking space but also a room for everyday socializing.

It was a given that natural and durable materials would be the cornerstone of our townhouse renovation. Our aim was for the additions to blend as seamlessly with the house as its 150-year-old brick facade. We focused on quality craftsmanship and took time with the details to ensure everything came together seamlessly, says Architect Jeppe Dueholm.

In terms of design and material, the kitchen blends in nicely with the rest of the house. Walls and upper cabinets have the same tone throughout and have all been inspired by the house's iconic brick facade.
