Classic Shaker kitchen in the heart of Copenhagen

In one of Copenhagen's trendiest neighborhoods - Frederiksberg, we helped a Swedish-Danish couple renovate a kitchen in classic Scandinavian shaker style. When the couple moved in, the apartment was completely renovated but with a great focus on preserving and highlighting original details and avoiding modern solutions that did not fit into this charming turn-of-the-century apartment.

The kitchen is spaciously decorated with a smaller dining group. In the dining room next door there is room for large dinners with several guests.

When the couple bought the apartment, they had just moved home from many years living abroad. After returning back home, they both felt a relight passion for Scandinavian aesthetic, which led to them choosing to build a classic Shaker kitchen with a modern Scandinavian touch.  A choice they are incredibly happy with as it is a style that is timeless and will last over time.

The Shaker movement is synonymous with a building style that is based on craftsmanship, quality and functionality. The kitchen cabinets have classic elements such as symmetrical frames around a mirror and handles executed with simple elegance. Colors used in the shaker movement were often made using clay and pigments from plants, which resulted in matte earthy natural colors. We draw inspiration from this and painted this modern Shaker kitchen in a warm gray tone.

The Shaker movement used materials that could be found in nature. Oak, stone and clay were some of them.

The original floor has been preserved and sanded to create a warm and soft contrast to the sleek kitchen with metal handles from Brand Collective.

The owners had a desire to be able to host large social dinners, but chose to place a larger dining group in the separate dining room adjacent to the kitchen. With such a solution, you let your guests be at ease and not be distracted by the preparations in the kitchen before a dinner or any dirty dishes left for tomorrow, while the kitchen remains airy and easy to move in.

A beautiful grey marble was chosen for countertops and splash guard. The shaker style is associated with quality and simplicity which makes marble an great choice.

A generous kitchen island has been built parallel to the kitchen, also built with a beautiful marble countertop. Here, the couple prepares meals with their dinner guests or have a glass of wine together before dinner.

By basing the kitchen design on the architecture of the home, the kitchen feels both modern and minimalist while being perfectly suited to the classic and timeless attributes found in the apartment, such as the beautiful structure of the ceiling.  The sleek straight frames of the cabinet doors breathe Danish design in a balanced and restrained way.  By using calm tones such as grey and white, the natural stone and the beautiful wooden floor really get the attention they deserve.

This kitchen creates a must-have feeling with its stylish lines and choice of materials that breathe quality and durability.

The site-built upper cabinets are also typical for Shaker kitchens, where they should be placed with a lot of air both over and around the sides. It creates a spacious feel while at the same time hold large parts of the kitchen's storage needs.

The restrained and elegant vein in the stone attracts the eyes without taking over too much, just according to the principles of the Shaker movement. To soften the otherwise stripped-down room, lovely curtains and wooden furniture are used, which creates an inviting and cozy feeling.

The kitchen is equipped with luxury miele appliances and the stainless steel mixer is from Quooker, which matches the modern handles on cabinets and hatches.

The handles on drawers and cabinets are made by the Danish interior designer Brand Collective. The minimalist handles make sure that the kitchen does not feel too traditional but creates a little more boldness in the otherwise elegant kitchen. By working with contrasts between modern and classic, you get an interesting and unique kitchen design that will last over time.
