The Chiswick Kitchen in London
In the charming and sought-after district of Chiswick in West London, an English townhouse in beautiful Victorian style features a kitchen that seamlessly combines Scandinavian minimalism with rustic English charm in a harmonious blend that creates both warmth and elegance.
Chiswick is an idyllic neighborhood, known for its 18th-century houses, village-like atmosphere, and leafy boulevards. In this picturesque setting, the architecture firm Studio Werc helped Leigh and Goutam and their family achieve their dream of a more spacious, personalized home with improved areas for family gatherings.
The ground floor was extended to include a new room that is bathed in light from a large skylight and glass doors leading to the backyard. This addition created both space and a unique character. The previously cramped kitchen was replaced with a custom-built kitchen in white-pigmented oak from Nordiska Kök, featuring clear symmetry that highlights the beautiful lines and warmth of the wood.
“When we received the design proposal from Nordiska Kök, we were immediately impressed and knew the final result would match our vision,” says Ioana Ungureanu, project architect at Studio Werc. The new kitchen features white-pigmented oak with elegant framework and Bianco Fantastico marble worktop. The choice of materials creates a harmonious balance between Scandinavian minimalism and English rustic charm, making the room feel both warm and inviting while maintaining a bright and airy atmosphere. The marble reflects the beautiful light, and the oak elegantly connects the kitchen to the garden outside.
To enhance the social flow, a kitchen island was placed in the center of the room, with a dining table on one side and a kitchen counter on the other. The design features classic Scandinavian elements such as built-in appliances, clean lines, and understated details, complemented by rustic touches in the sturdy frames and generously sized island.
One of the most striking features is the bespoke wall and bench opposite the kitchen island. Made from the same warm, white-pigmented oak as the kitchen cabinets, they tie the kitchen to the rest of the architecture, providing a cohesive and exclusive feel. The extensive use of oak makes the design feel timeless and adds character to the home.
“Our head builder was initially reluctant to take responsibility for the installation because it was coming from abroad. However, thanks to the meticulous planning and precise numbering of each piece, including the oak feature wall, the installation went smoothly without any issues,” she continues.
