Modern elegance in the heart of Copenhagen
Elegant yet contemporary—that's how we would describe this dark wooden kitchen in the Danish turn-of-the-century apartment in the heart of Copenhagen. Few but carefully selected materials harmonize while also creating an exciting, minimalist contrast to the well-preserved charm of the apartment.
Located in an enviable spot next to the popular Frederiksberg Square in Copenhagen, this apartment checks off almost everything on the wish list. It features five spacious living rooms in a row, offering views of the Copenhagen skyline, while the bedrooms and kitchen overlook a quiet, leafy courtyard. The owner, Thomas, wanted to preserve the beautiful details from the original 1905 construction, such as tiled stoves and ceiling rosettes, while still adding a minimalist and contemporary feel to the apartment. ”I wanted to add a minimalist and contemporary feel to the otherwise traditional design but still keep the original charm with the stucco, the wooden doors and the tiled stove”, Thomas says.
The dark oak kitchen is centrally located in the apartment, with a lovely balcony at one end and a spacious dining room at the other. This makes the kitchen a natural gathering point in the home. As a stunning centerpiece, the kitchen sets the style for the residence while creating a striking contrast with the historical architectural details, giving the entire home a sleek, elegant appearance with a touch of modern luxury.

The warm, natural wood tones paired with details in stainless steel evoke a sense of modern Scandinavian design and give the kitchen an understated elegance. By primarily focusing on these two materials—wood and steel—the room achieves a refined and exclusive look. To further enhance this, all appliances are seamlessly integrated behind the beautiful oak cabinet doors. Additionally, one of the doors hides a secret entrance leading to the stairwell, adding both practicality and an intriguing design element.
”By using the same material throughout the apartment, such as Travertine stone in all door openings and on the shelves on the kitchen wall, which is also seen in other rooms, a cohesive design was created that ties the whole apartment together. By adding these details, the apartment also achieves a more interesting design that both harmonizes and provides contrast,” Thomas says.
The kitchen is site-built and customized to achieve a seamless look in modern Danish design. The smooth cabinet doors beautifully contrast with the slightly more rustic kitchen island, which also features an stainless steel countertop. The solid wood drawers are stained in the same dark shade as the kitchen and provide plenty of storage space.
