Minimalist and elegant design kitchen

With a view over Lärkstaden in Östermalm, Stockholm, Krista Hjärpe and her husband Anders have carefully renovated an apartment that exudes a unique sense of style. The apartment exudes Scandinavian minimalism with a hint of French elegance, with soft, rounded corners as a consistent theme throughout, from the kitchen to the interior details.

Kitchen design – Nordiska Kök

The apartment combines Scandinavian minimalism with a touch of French elegance, and soft, rounded corners are reflected throughout the design.

The rounded shapes permeate the entire apartment, with glass panels in dark oak as a contrast, featured in both the kitchen and the living room.

When Krista and Anders were searching for a new apartment, they were drawn to a beautiful 1930s building in the historic district of Östermalm, Stockholm. However, it was mainly the view of Lärkstaden and the stunning original leaded-glass window in the dining room that convinced them to make the purchase. The building was in such poor condition, though, that the couple decided to completely renovate it. They had to tear everything down, right down to the foundation, leaving only a gravel floor.

– Just like with our previous renovation, we felt it was important that the apartment was in bad enough shape to justify such an extensive renovation, as we still wanted to think sustainably, Krista explains.

The rounded, built-in cabinet features a beautiful interior of light oak.

Krista and Anders preserved the original leaded-glass window in the dining room, a timeless detail that adds character to the space.

The couple demolished the old interior and rebuilt the walls, including a large oak-framed glass partition. The kitchen received a completely new layout and was so spacious that they were able to divide it into both a kitchen and a laundry room—something that had been lacking in the apartment—without compromising on space or the kitchen's flow.

– I love the design of Nordiska Kök. It feels very Nordic, with clean, timeless design. When I was looking for inspiration for my first kitchen, their photos really appealed to me. It felt both modern and classic. After our first project, we also felt we were treated exceptionally well and received excellent service. It felt like we were both heard and understood, which was very important to us. We also appreciated that they could customize everything, giving a truly bespoke, built-in feel.

When Krista and Anders were seeking inspiration for the renovation and style of the apartment, they were drawn to the rounded forms and corners they had seen in Nordiska Kök’s designs, particularly in the cabinet doors. They decided to make this theme a key element throughout the apartment, with rounded shapes appearing not only in the kitchen design but also in the glass partitions between the kitchen and living room.

The thoughtfully designed kitchen features cabinets that extend all the way down to the countertop, with rounded corners in a sleek and minimalist design.

With many years of experience as an artist and illustrator, Krista founded KisuArt, which offers abstract hand-painted watercolor posters.

– I get a lot of inspiration from Denmark, New York, and London. I love Scandinavian simplicity, but I also long for something bolder and more cultural. I enjoy when 'Old meets New,' blending the new with the old, and incorporating personal items. It's important that it doesn’t become too much of the mass-produced, trendy details, Krista says.
